CPEhr and New Directions

Veterans’ Career Day a Huge Success

New Directions, a non-profit organization providing services to U.S. veterans, hosted CPEhr at their facilities located on the Veterans Administration grounds in West Los Angeles on December 5th, 2008. Over 80 veterans registered for the event which was geared towards educating vets to prepare for, successfully interview for, and maintain employment. Click here to view the Photo Gallery

The Day’s Events

The event was kicked off shortly after 9am by Brigette Slayton, New Directions’ Vocational Program Manager. Jeremiah Michaels, ND’s Career Advisor spoke for a few minutes and introduced Ari Rosenstein, CPEhr’s Director of Marketing. Ari recapped the purpose of the day, reviewed the classes and introduced the presenters, Linda Robinson, CPEhr’s Training Manager, and Angela Showell, CPEhr’s Recruiter.

At 9:15, the registrants broke up into two groups of 40, to attend simultaneous presentations on the topics of “How to Look for a Job” facilitated by Angela, and “How to Interview for the Job” facilitated by Linda. At the conclusion of the hour presentations, there was a 10 minute break and the groups rotated to attend the alternate presentation.

Angela’s topic included subjects such as:

  • How to build a great resume
  • Know where to look for a job
  • What employers look for in a resume/application
  • Cover letters
  • Top 10 industries that are always hiring
  • Finding work after the military

Linda’s topic included:

  • Grooming (first impressions)
  • Proper language
  • Researching the company
  • Preparing for questions
  • Practicing answers
  • Believe in yourself

The third and final session of the day was conducted by Linda with both groups rejoining in the opening seminar room. Linda gave a powerful presentation on the topic of Professional Behavior in the Workplace and interpersonal skills. The entire crowd was held captive by Linda’s passionate presentation and emotional conclusion.

Capping off the day was a presentation by Dan Lozano, a retired Marine who now works for an organization called “Helmets to Hardhats” that assists veterans in finding work in the construction industry.

In Summary

The message of the day was clear – while the economy is tight and employment opportunities may be hard to come by, these individuals have overcome tremendous hardships in their lives and have a great deal of experience to offer new employers. As each veteran exited the seminar room, they were presented with a Certificate of Completion and word of encouragement.

The management of New Directions, as well as all the attendees, were extremely grateful to CPEhr for expending the time, energy and initiative to conduct this worthwhile volunteer program.
